A Michelin Star chef feeds millions in India’s lockdown: Explained

Vikas Khanna, a Michelin-starred chef has been providing meals to poor Indians who were stranded in the lockdown.

Five things about this unsung hero:

  • Mr. Khanna has distributed more than seven million packets of dry food and cooked meals over the past month in more than a hundred cities. India Gate and Daawat donated food, and the financial technology giant Paytm recently became a sponsor.
  • HungerBox, a food technology company, offered the use of its industrial kitchens in Mumbai and Noida to cook over 20,000 meals every day.
  • Mr. Khanna studied in New York and was formerly the executive chief at Junoon, which was awarded a Michelin star for its use of the inventive methods on traditional Indian cuisine.
  • Born in Amritsar, he was inspired by the large community kitchens of the Sikh Gurdwaras who serve meals to anyone. A day before Eid, Mr. Khanna distributed feast kits for more than 2, 00,000 people in Mumbai.
  • At a time when governments are retrenching from their responsibilities, celebrity chef Vikas Khanna feeds 2, 75,000 people each day.
